Losing weight in one particular region of the body is
impossible. When we lose weight, we lose it all over. To
get the body of your dreams, you need a lower-calorie low-fat
diet. You must also understand that fat comes off gradually
from all over your body, not just a few selected spots.
Spot
reduction refers to the idea that when we exercise a specific body
part, the involved muscles use the surrounding fat for energy.
This is why many people perform high repetition sit-ups, side bends,
leg raises, etc. They want to magically burn off fat.
Unfortunately, such beliefs and practices are not based on
scientific fact. For example, you see someone who you haven't
seen in awhile. He is bundled up in winter clothes.
However, you still notice his weight loss just by looking at his
face.
What
exercises did he do to lose weight in his face? The answer is
obvious. No one tries to lose weight in their face. When
we lose weight, we lose it from all over our bodies.
When
men say they want terrific abs, they are really saying they want to
have 8% to 12% body fat. That is the requirement for achieving
definition in the abdominal region.
For
women to have the hips, thighs and buttocks they crave, their body
fat must be between 18% and 22%. They only way to achieve the
definition and smooth lines we are looking for is to combine low-fat
eating with regular strength training.
There
are four principles we must follow to lose weight and see muscle
definition:
-
The overall consumption of calories must be lower
than the energy expenditure on a daily basis.
-
We
should correctly balance the calories ingested from the major food
groups.
-
The calories
consumed should descend gradually as the diet progresses.
-
We must regularly strength train to ensure fat loss,
increased metabolic rate and improved body
shape.
The Spot
Reduction Myth - All men want great abs. All women want
shapely hips, thighs and buttocks. The only way to get these
terrific looking body parts is to exercise them into oblivion,
right? WRONG!
